How to Avoid Orthodontic Emergencies—and What to Do If One Happens
Orthodontic treatment is a big step toward a healthier, more confident smile, and while it’s usually smooth sailing, the occasional hiccup can happen. At Cranford Orthodontics, we want to make sure you know how to prevent orthodontic emergencies and feel confident handling them if they ever arise.
Here’s your guide to protecting your smile and staying prepared.
Keep Issues from Arising in the First Place
Good habits make all the difference. Most orthodontic emergencies can be avoided with a little extra care in your day-to-day routine.
Here’s what we recommend:
- Stick to safe foods. – Popcorn, hard candy, gum, and crunchy snacks can all damage braces and wires. Stick to softer foods and cut up anything hard or chewy into smaller, bite-sized pieces.
- Wear a mouthguard for sports. – Whether you’re on the field or the court, a mouthguard can prevent broken brackets and painful injuries.
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene. – Braces make it easier for food and plaque to hide, which means you’ll need to brush and floss thoroughly every day. Healthy gums and clean teeth help avoid discomfort and delays.
- Call us before you DIY. – If something breaks or feels out of place, resist the urge to fix it yourself. We’re always happy to advise you. Just give us a call!
When to Call, and What You Can Handle at Home

Quick Fixes Until We Can See You
For those minor annoyances, there are a few things you can do at home to ease the discomfort:
- Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp edges or poking wires.
- Tuck in loose wires using a cotton swab.
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritated areas.
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed, following package directions.
- Wear your previous aligner tray if you’ve lost your current one, and call us to find out the next best step.
