Orthodontic Appliances: What They Are, Types, and How They Work
Orthodontics is about more than just braces. Today, there are many different appliances that help guide teeth and jaws into their best position. At Cranford Orthodontics, we use expanders, retainers, elastics, and other specialized tools to make sure every patient’s smile gets the care it needs.
What Are Orthodontic Appliances?
Orthodontic appliances are devices, either fixed or removable, that work alongside braces or clear aligners. They may move teeth, correct bite issues, expand the palate, or hold your smile in its new position after treatment. Each one is custom-made for your mouth and treatment plan.
Common Types of Appliances
Expanders
A palatal expander gently widens the upper jaw to create more space for teeth and improve the way your bite fits together. These are often used in younger patients, while the jaw is still growing.
Retainers
Retainers are used after braces or clear aligner treatment to hold teeth in their new positions.
- Removable retainers can be taken out for eating and cleaning.
- Fixed retainers are thin wires bonded to the back of the teeth for continuous support.
Elastics
Also called rubber bands, elastics are small but powerful helpers that connect between brackets to guide bite correction. They may adjust how the upper and lower teeth fit together or fine-tune alignment.
Other Appliances
- Space maintainers, also known as a holding arch, keep room for permanent teeth if a baby tooth is lost too early. Bite plates help correct deep bites by preventing the top teeth from completely covering the lower teeth.
- Herbst appliances guide jaw growth to improve bite and profile, especially in growing teens.
- Habit appliances are meant to discourage behaviors, like finger sucking or thumb thrusting, which could lead to alignment problems.
How to Use Them
- Follow instructions closely: Whether it is turning an expander key, wearing elastics daily, or cleaning a retainer, consistency is key for results.
- Keep appliances clean: Brush removable appliances daily and keep them in their case when not in use. For fixed appliances, brush carefully around wires and brackets.
- Wear them as directed: Skipping days or hours of use can delay treatment progress.
- Ask questions: If something feels uncomfortable or breaks, contact our office right away so we can keep your treatment on track.
